This series consists of records relating to forestry, logging, and mills. The records provide information on general forestry, forest fires, tree diseases, sawmills, and logging operations at the Consolidated Chippewa Agency, the Great Lakes Consolidated Agency, the Menominee Agency, Pipestone Indian School, the Red Lake Agency, and the Tomah Indian School and Agency. The records include letters received and copies of letters sent. The correspondents include the Commissioner of Indian Affairs; local, regional, and headquarters officials from the Bureau of Indian Affairs; and officials from lumber companies. The records include maps; estimates; forms; reports; telegrams; tables; minutes; vouchers; manuals; plans; blueprints; photographs; and clippings. The records include a sample of leaves with blister rust damage. The records provide information on timber stand improvement; insect damage, including hemlock borers; fire control; tree nurseries and planting; forestry and fire schools; grazing; and blister rust control. The records also cover forest cruises; blow down claims; lawsuits with lumber companies; clear cutting practices; and timber contract administration. Topics related to management and administration of forest services on Indian land and reservations include meetings and conferences; finance and accounts; personnel management and expenditures; travel; and training. Reports, correspondence, and other documents from Menominee Indian Mills are present. The files include records from U.S. Court of Claims Case 44303, Menominee Tribe vs. U.S., the bulk covering 1947-1948. The case involved a dispute over payment for timber removed from swamp lands held in trust by the U.S. for the Menominee Tribe. Testimonies, lists of exhibits, memorandums, correspondence, notes, newspapers, and related records are contained in the files.

Tomah Indian Industrial School (Tomah, Wis.)

The Tomah Indian School was authorized as a nonreservation boarding school in 1891 and opened in 1893. The Tomah Indian School was given agency duties in 1911 for the Hocak (Winnebago) Indians of Wisconsin. Agency duties were transferred to the Grand Rapids Agency in 1916, but in 1927 that agency-level jurisdiction was consolidated with the Tomah School, which regained its agency status. Pipestone Indian Industrial Training School

Established in 1893, the Pipestone Indian School was built on land taken from the Yankton reservation at the Pipestone Quarry. The Yankton people long contested that loss and won before the Supreme Court in 1926. In 1894 the formation of the Pipestone Indian Training School was authorized on the uninhabited Yankton Pipestone reservation.
